There's a new vending machine at Seth Whitman school in Belvidere.

But instead of soft drinks and candy, this machine includes Dr. Seuss books and other soft covers.

The Belvidere elementary school is the first in District 100 to have a book vending machine. The Seth Whitman PTO raised money to buy the machine through it's Race For Education fundraiser in October.

Book vending machines have been gaining in popularity throughout the country.

"It's a machine that we are hoping to promote literacy and positive reinforcement for behavior here at Seth Whitman," says Heather Steines, Whitman Elementary PTO Co-Vice President. "It just brings an added bit of fun. Earning a token to get a free book is just something that's exciting for the students. "

As a dual-language school, Whitman Elementary has filled its machine with English and Spanish books.
