This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof
Hello and Good Publishing Day to YOU …
WHOA … what a weekend here in my neck of the woods. Snow, Snow, and MORE snow! The storm that turned into Colorado’s #4, dumping four feet on my driveway; filling the back deck to the roof, and blocking all my doors! Opening the garage, the push started, eventually making way for a car to get out over two days. Then a tunnel to the front door and clearing the porch. Next on the list is welcoming the sun gods so melting can start for the back deck. What a weekend!
Looking forward to the second session of the Amazon Bestseller 4-week workshop today. The next one will roll out in May. Would love to have you part of the author success train.

It’s St. Paddy’s Day. How about an Author jig to celebrate what’s working? Or one that supports your enthusiasm for your book? Will, why not?

So tickled to see that AuthorYOU member and personal Book Shepherd client Michelle Marchildon’s book co-authored with Desiree Rumbaugh (Fearless After Fifty) is a feature under the PBS umbrella this month: The Tranformational Power of Yoga. Do a search on your local station to catch: https://www.pbs.org/show/transformational-power-yoga/
This week, two of the AuthorYOU authors step up to the plate starting tomorrow, Thursday. Free eBooks are yours. You can grab Sally Bartlett’s Dammit … It Is Menopause! and John Maling’s Have You Ever Held a Mountain?
And I was thrilled to spend 30 minutes with Stephanie Chandler and the Nonfiction Authors Association for a deep dive into “how to prepare for media interviews” – lots of tips and insights. It’s LIVE today at: http://ow.ly/MQsm30rB19l

All Podcast Interviews air on Wednesdays at 10am PDT / 1pm EDT.

Know your Author and Book Publishing Rights

Knowing your rights and when to call an attorney is important as an author, publisher, vendor, and as a person.
Many times, authors:

· Don’t understand how to read a contract and negotiate the details;
· Don’t know how to use their own or others’ materials (think, pictures, diaries, etc.).
· Don’t understand the use copyrights or trademarks in their books, blog posts, and social media postings.

Copyright laws have recently changed recently … it’s TIME to update what you know; what you thought you know; and what you need to know.
Saturday, April 3, 2021 will provide a practical approach that can save you a lot of money, time, and aggravation.

Julie Bernard … is the CEO of Bernard IP Law. She is a registered patent and intellectual property attorney who brings twenty-five years of experience to the table. Julie focuses her practice on US and international patents, US and international trademarks, copyrights, intellectual property portfolio strategy and management, transactions and licenses, and technology transfer. Questions of the Week:

Question: Should I start a podcast?

Answer: Maybe … I know, I know … there’s less than a million of them out there. The truth is: most of them limp along. You must ask yourself: Will I commit to supporting it? Will I promote it? Will I provide interesting content? Will I do a podcast regularly?

Last month, the six-year-old AuthorU-Your Guide to Book Publishing Podcast enjoyed 1.5 million downloads. As of today, it has over 700,000 for the month of March. That’s huge … and it didn’t happen overnight.

Know what your expectations are. Mine was: I wanted to create a publishing and author-loaded content program. I would do it weekly and I wouldn’t do “repeat” plays—every show would be new.

I never put numbers of listeners on my back. It wasn’t until five years later did I know that a podcast was successful if there were 2,400 downloads a month.  My first month, I passed 3,500 downloads—I’ve never looked back. If can answer YES to all the questions in the first paragraph, go for it. Otherwise, take a pass.

You can pick my brain … minimum time is 30 minutes. If you need one-on-one-time with me, I’m always open for a few minutes to give you some quick input. But, and it’s a BIG BUT, many call and expect far more than a few minutes.

This is called a “consult” and I would be delighted to schedule time with you for “just you and your many questions” that need answers. You can book time with me it at: http://bit.ly/JudithCoaching

Author Friendly Friday this week …

Join Author Friendly Fridays: a fun, sharing and a dynamic closed group. You can join in the next week. It’s a full hour when you can ask questions—any question. And, I always include a few strategies to get your authoring life ahead of the competition.

It’s for paid subscribers ONLY and we do it on Zoom.

This is how each call starts: I share a few strategies, tips and tools that attendees can immediately start to use. All share … and ask plenty of questions. They get answers. Definitely an excellent way to start a Friday. Those of you who aren’t participating, you are making a mistake. I love the variety of books and authors who have chosen to participate. What’s also fun, is the energy that can be felt with what everyone is working on. Love it!
